Last week, S&P (of '500' fame) announced the launch of the first socially responsible India index, the S&P Environmental Social and Governance India Index. According to the KLD press release, the ESG India Index is "the first investable index of companies whose business strategies and performance demonstrate a high level of commitment to meeting ESG standards" in India and is comprised of 50 companies (from among the largest 500 listed on the National Stock Exchange of India). The decisions to include or exclude were made by a consortium of three companies: S&P (whose area of expertise is governance metrics and indices), KLD (social and environmental research firm) and CRISIL (Indian business and regulatory context). The language of the press release is consistent with the current and favorable tone of assuring investors that "the profit motive is brought into alignment with public interest".

On Jan. 19, the U.S. House of Representatives passed an energy bill that removed tax breaks for Big Oil.
It also mandated the renegotiation of the 1998-1999 Gulf of Mexico oil and gas leases, some of which had mysteriously omitted a clause requiring leaseholders to pay royalties when oil prices exceeded $36 a barrel. Oil topped $36 in 2003.

This morning Exxon Mobil (XOM) reported on its quarterly 2007 profits. While many oil companies moaned about rising oil prices, Exxon proved that $90 a barrel oil (and above) is not a bad thing for Big Oil profits. MarketWatch reports on the record profits for Exxon: Exxon Mobil on Friday reported its most lucrative quarter ever, as profit neared the $12 billion mark on a slight rise in adjusted oil production, capping off a year of record crude-oil prices.

On Monday night, President George W. Bush gave his seventh and final State of the Union address (eighth if you count the inauguration speech back in 2001). But before I continue, I would like to issue the disclaimer that this weblog is not designed to be an in-depth critique of our president's speech. There are plenty of other bloggers out there that are providing that. Instead, I wanted to comment on one particular section of the speech -- the alternative energy section. Especially given that this subject has been receiving increasingly more air time in recent State of the Union addresses. |

Rainforest Action Network (RAN) reports that 59 proposed coal-fired power plants have been cancelled or shelved in the past year. Both RAN and Coal Moratorium NOW! have been calling for a moratorium on the construction of new coal-fired power plants through education, grass roots organizing and non-violent direct action, such as the National Global Warming Teach-In on January 31, 2008. |

I fondly remember the first (and only) time I went to the International Auto Show in Detroit. On that blustery Saturday morning in January 1997, I had recently begun my last semester of college and I was lamenting with a couple of friends about how we had never been to the largest and most famous auto show in the country. So, without much ado, we decided to climb into a car and drive one hour east to the Motor City. |
